RESUMO

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have emerged as a promising alternative to lithium-ion batteries for large-scale energy storage systems due to the abundance and low price of sodium. Until recently, the low theoretical capacities of intercalation-type cathodes less than 250 mAh g-1 have limited the energy density of SIBs. On the other hand, iron oxyfluoride (FeOF) has a high theoretical capacity of ≈885 mAh g-1 as a conversion-type cathode material for SIBs. However, FeOF suffers from poor cycling stability, rate capability, and low initial Coulombic efficiency caused by its low electrical conductivity and slow ionic diffusion kinetics. To solve these problems, doping aliovalent Ni2+ on FeOF electrodes is attempted to improve the electronic conductivity without using a carbon matrix. The ionic conductivity of FeOF is also enhanced due to the formation of oxygen defects in the FeOF crystal structure. The FeOF-Ni1 electrode shows an excellent cycling performance with a reversible discharge capacity of 450.4 mAh g-1 at 100 mAh g-1 after 100 cycles with a fading rate of 0.20% per cycle. In addition, the FeOF-Ni1//hard carbon full cell exhibited a high energy density of 876.9 Wh kg-1 cathode with a good cycling stability.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: We first utilized and reported on the use of cryoanalgesia for postoperative pain control for Nuss procedure in 2016. We hypothesized that postoperative pain control could be optimized if the intercostal nerve anatomy is better understood. To test this hypothesis, human cadavers were dissected to elucidate the intercostal nerve anatomy. Cryoablation technique was modified. METHODS: Cadaver Study: Adult cadavers were used to visualize the branching patterns of the intercostal nerves. Cryoablation: Posterior to the mid-axillary line for intercostal nerves 4, 5, 6 and 7, main intercostal nerve, lateral cutaneous branch and collateral branch were cryoablated under thoracoscopic view. Verbal pain scores were obtained from patients one day after the procedure. RESULTS: The study results were obtained during the years 2021 and 2022. Eleven cadavers were dissected. The path of the main intercostal and lateral cutaneous branch lie on the inferior rib surface of the corresponding intercostal nerve. Total of 92 lateral cutaneous branches of the intercostal nerve were dissected and measured as they pierced the intercostal muscle. Most lateral cutaneous branches of the intercostal nerve pierced the intercostal muscle anterior to midaxillary line 78.3%, posterior to midaxillary line 18.5% or on the midaxillary line 3.3%. The collateral branch of the intercostal nerve separated near the spine and traveled along the superior surface of the next inferior rib. Cryoablation: 22 male patients underwent Nuss procedure with cryoanalgesia. Median age of the patients was 15 years (IQR: 2), median Haller index was 3.73 (IQR: 0.85), median pain score (0-10 maximum pain) was 1 (IQR: 1.75). CONCLUSION: Cryoablation of the intercostal nerve and its two branches improves pain control after a Nuss procedure. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 4. TYPE OF STUDY: Observational study.

RESUMO

In this work, the effectiveness of pyrite/sodium hypochlorite (FeS2/NaClO) treatment to eliminate arsenic (As) from fractured-bedrock groundwater via oxidative adsorption was evaluated. The As concentration in the tested reactors decreased sharply during the initial 5 min, as the addition of NaClO effectively increased the As removal efficiency, attaining 98.6% removal within 60 min in the presence of 0.05 M NaClO. There was no coexisting anion effect (Cl-, CO3-, HCO3-, NO3-, and F-) on the As removal capacity of FeS2/NaClO, except for the PO43- which resulted in less removal of As. X-ray spectroscopy analysis of As(III)-sorbed FeS2 surfaces revealed that a portion of As(III) was oxidized into As(V) during the adsorption process. Scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive spectrometer results of FeS2 exhibited the distribution of adsorbed As on the newly formed iron (oxy) hydroxide surfaces, with an As element ratio of 1.27%. A continuous flow-bed column study further demonstrated the efficiency of FeS2/NaClO treatment to lower the contamination level of As at the removal rates of 0.66-3.02 mg/L·day for 160 h. These results suggest that FeS2/NaClO treatment can be considered an effective strategy for removing As in groundwater of bedrock aquifers.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: There has been a longstanding debate about whether the mechanisms involved in problematic sexual behavior (PSB) are similar to those observed in addictive disorders, or related to impulse control or to compulsivity. The aim of this report was to contribute to this debate by investigating the association between PSB, addictive disorders (internet addiction, compulsive buying), measures associated with the construct known as reward deficiency (RDS), and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). METHODS: A Canadian university Office of the Registrar invited 68,846 eligible students and postdoctoral fellows. Of 4710 expressing interest in participating, 3359 completed online questionnaires, and 1801 completed the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview. PSB was measured by combining those screening positive (score at least 6) on the Sexual Addiction Screening Test-Revised Core with those self-reporting PSB. Current mental health condition(s) and childhood trauma were measured by self-report. OCD was assessed by a combination of self-report and Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview data. RESULTS: Of 3341 participants, 407 (12.18%) screened positive on the Sexual Addiction Screening Test-Revised Core. On logistic regression, OCD, attention deficit, internet addiction, a family history of PSB, childhood trauma, compulsive buying, and male gender were associated with PSB. On multiple correspondence analysis, OCD appeared to cluster separately from the other measures, and the pattern of data differed by gender. CONCLUSIONS: In our sample, factors that have previously been associated with RDS and OCD are both associated with increased odds of PSB. The factors associated with RDS appear to contribute to a separate data cluster from OCD and to lie closer to PSB.

RESUMO

In this study, the natural attenuation potential and biogeochemical analysis of nitrate contaminated bedrock aquifers by injection of carbon sources was evaluated. The denitrification capacity was assessed by injecting different carbon sources (succinate, acetate, fumarate) into the groundwater. Acetate was identified as the optimum source of electron donors for microbial metabolic processes, as it improved the effect of nitrate removal and microbial activity in the groundwater. In addition, when acetate was injected with a C/N ratio = 2.1:1, the ratio of denitrifying bacteria was the greatest (C/N 2.1 (2.1%) > C/N 4.2 (1.9%) > C/N 7.0 (0.9%) > control (0.7%)). Reflecting the geochemical characteristics of the bedrock aquifer environment, acetate was injected into groundwater at the research site to activate biological heterotrophic denitrification. As a result, the nitrate reduction rate was 0.377 g-N/day (YP-3), while the rate in groundwater unaffected by acetate was significantly lower, at 0.028 g-N/day (YP-4) over the same reaction time. In particular, the ratio of Dechloromonas denitrificans sp., which is a representative denitrification bacteria involved in anaerobic reduction of nitrate, increased (before injection: 0.0089%, after injection: 1.3067%). Expression of the nosZ gene, which is involved in the denitrification pathway (N2O â†’ N2), increased from 4.82 Log (gene copies L-1) to 9.71 Log (gene copies L-1). Together, these results demonstrate that denitrification in bedrock aquifers can be activated by injection of carbon sources and identified the genetic reason for that denitrification.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Suicide is one of the leading causes of death in the military as in the general population. To mitigate such a serious public health problem, identifying the risk or protective factors of suicide behaviors is crucial. METHODS: We analyzed the representative data of the 2014 Korean Armed Forces to explore the relationship between past year adverse events (PAE), accumulated lifetime trauma (ALT), mental illness vulnerability, perceived social support, and suicidal ideation in the previous year. RESULTS: Among the 6,377 subjects, 3.7% of males and 6.2% of females reported suicidal ideation in the previous year. Multivariate analytic models identified significant associations of PAE and ALT with suicidal ideation with a dose-response pattern. The mental illness vulnerability showed the most significant association with suicidal ideation even after controlling PAE or ALT. We found that perceived social support may be potentially linked with a reduced risk of suicidal ideation. CONCLUSION: This Korean military representative data demonstrates mental illness vulnerability; PAE; and lifetime trauma as significant risk factors of suicidal ideation, while perceived social support was found as a potential protective factor. Given the importance of the prevention of suicide in the military, those risk and protective factors may be used to screen soldiers at risk of suicide and provide further support on mental health services as needed.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Multidrug-resistant (MDR) Acinetobacter baumannii as well as MDR Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and other Enterobacteriaceae ('ESKAPE' pathogens) currently present a major public-health problem. These bacteria are associated with opportunistic infections in intensive care units as well as in immunocompromised patients. There is an urgent need for new alternative antibacterials to control these MDR bacteria. Here we describe the antibacterial action of a novel peptidoglycan hydrolase that targets the bacterial cell wall, identified in the genome of clinical isolate A. baumannii 1656-2. METHODS: We generated a recombinant protein from a sequence encoding a lysozyme-like protein identified in the genome of A. baumannii 1656-2. We named it Ablysin and tested its antibacterial activity and biofilm removal ability targeting ESKAPE pathogens. RESULTS: In vitro application of Ablysin resulted in growth inhibition of the six aforementioned bacterial species, with a highest activity against A. baumannii. Electron microscopy revealed the concentration-dependent (250-2000 µg/mL) rupture of A. baumannii bacterial cells accompanied by elimination of the associated biofilm. CONCLUSIONS: Ablysin represents a potential new class of antibacterial proteins that can be used to target MDR A. baumannii as well as other bacterial species.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria are a major public-health concern. Bacteriophage endolysins (lysins) can be used as novel antimicrobial agents against bacterial infections. In this study, a novel endolysin (LysSS) containing a lysozyme-like domain was evaluated for its antibacterial activity against various species of bacteria. METHODS: The LysSS-encoding gene was analyzed and cloned and the LysSS recombinant protein was expressed and purified. Purified LysSS was used to determine its antimicrobial activity against various bacterial species in vitro and to measure its protection rate against Acinetobacter baumannii systemic infection in an in vivo murine model. RESULTS: Recombinant LysSS showed activity against MDR A. baumannii, MDR Escherichia coli, MDR Klebsiella pneumoniae, MDR Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Salmonella sp. without pre-treatment with an outer membrane permeabiliser. Moreover, LysSS inhibited the growth of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of LysSS against 16 MDR A. baumannii strains ranged from 0.063-0.25mg/mL. LysSS had no cytotoxic effect on A549 human lung cells below 250µg/mL. In an animal model, mice infected with A. baumannii were protected (40% survival rate with 125µg LysSS) by intraperitoneal injection of LysSS. CONCLUSION: The current results demonstrate that LysSS may be a novel and promising antimicrobial agent against MRSA and MDR Gram-negative bacteria, including A. baumannii and P. aeruginosa.

RESUMO

This study represents the heating-up synthesis of lead-free cesium bismuth bromide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs). CsBr and BiBr3 precursors are used to synthesize uniform and phase-pure cesium bismuth bromide NCs, and the reaction is performed via an injection-free, heating-up method in the presence of a solvent mixture with a high boiling point. The size and composition of cesium bismuth bromide NCs are readily controlled by changing the reaction time, temperature, and amount of surfactant added to the reaction mixture. Upon heating, sequential phase evolution occurs, resulting in the formation of kinetically stable BiOBr in the early reaction stages, which transformed into the thermodynamically stable Cs3BiBr6 and Cs3Bi2Br9 with an increase in either the reaction time or the reaction temperature. Furthermore, the absorption and photoluminescence properties of Cs3BiBr6 and Cs3Bi2Br9 NCs are characterized to investigate their composition-dependent optical properties. This work provides the potential to synthesize various types of lead-free perovskite NCs by tailoring the size and compositions.

RESUMO

Mutations in CHMP2B, an ESCRT-III (endosomal sorting complexes required for transport) component, are associated with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Neurodegenerative disorders including FTD are also associated with a disruption in circadian rhythms, but the mechanism underlying this defect is not well understood. Here, we ectopically expressed the human CHMP2B variant associated with FTD (CHMP2BIntron5) in flies using the GMR-GAL4 driver (GMR>CHMP2BIntron5) and analyzed their circadian rhythms at behavioral, cellular, and biochemical level. In GMR>CHMP2BIntron5 flies, we observed disrupted eclosion rhythms, shortened free-running circadian locomotor period, and reduced levels of timeless (tim) mRNA-a circadian pacemaker gene. We also observed that the GMR-GAL4 driver, primarily known for its expression in the retina, drives expression in a subset of tim expressing neurons in the optic lobe of the brain. The patterning of these GMR- and tim-positive neurons in the optic lobe, which appears distinct from the putative clusters of circadian pacemaker neurons in the fly brain, was disrupted in GMR>CHMP2BIntron5 flies. These results demonstrate that CHMP2BIntron5 can disrupt the normal function of the circadian clock in Drosophila.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated whether the resilience of males with probable bipolar depression (PBD) can be strengthened and compared it to that of males with probable unipolar depression (PUD). METHODS: Prospective data for 198 participants (PBD: 66, PUD: 66, normal control: 66) were analyzed. The participants' resilience, bipolarity and severity of depressive symptoms were evaluated at baseline and after 5 weeks. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and repeated measure ANOVA was performed for comparing resilience between three groups through a basic military training. RESULTS: The PBD group demonstrated more resilience than the PUD group at baseline. Participants with PBD became significantly more resilient than participants with PUD after 5 weeks (p<0.01, F=6.967, η2p=0.052). CONCLUSION: The study indicates that interventions that strengthen resilience need to be developed for males with PBD and that such interventions are more effective for males with PBD than PUD.

RESUMO

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative condition characterized by degeneration of upper motor neurons (UMN) arising from the motor cortex in the brain and lower motor neurons (LMN) in the brainstem and spinal cord. Cerebral changes create differences in brain activity captured by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), including the spontaneous and simultaneous activity occurring between regions known as the resting state networks (RSNs). Progressive neurodegeneration as observed in ALS may lead to a disruption of RSNs which could provide insights into the disease process. Previous studies have reported conflicting findings of increased, decreased, or unaltered RSN functional connectivity in ALS and do not report the contribution of UMN changes to RSN connectivity. We aimed to bridge this gap by exploring two networks, the default mode network (DMN) and the sensorimotor network (SMN), in 21 ALS patients and 40 age-matched healthy volunteers. An UMN score dichotomized patients into UMN+ and UMN- groups. Subjects underwent resting state fMRI scan on a high field MRI operating at 4.7 tesla. The DMN and SMN changes between subject groups were compared. Correlations between connectivity and clinical measures such as the ALS Functional Rating Scale-Revised (ALSFRS-R), disease progression rate, symptom duration, UMN score and finger tapping were assessed. Significant group differences in resting state networks between patients and controls were absent, as was the dependence on degree of UMN burden. However, DMN connectivity was increased in patients with greater disability and faster progression rate, and SMN connectivity was reduced in those with greater motor impairment. These patterns of association are in line with literature supporting loss of inhibitory interneurons.
